Our most anticipated kit of the year is almost ready for launch. The Boyce Aerospace Hobbies 1/14th Scale Nike Hercules was originally released in 2018 as a limited production run. And now, in 2019, Boyce Aerospace Hobbies is re-releasing the popular kit, but with numerous enhancements.
Our model rocket is a 1/14th scale replica of the Nike Hercules used by the United States and NATO armed forces for medium- and high-altitude long-range air defense. You may or may not know the history of this surface-to-air missile, but here are a few notables. The Hercules was originally developed as an upgrade to the earlier MIM-3 Nike Ajax (we’ve been quietly working on the Boyce Aerospace Hobbies Ajax, too!), allowing it to carry a nuclear warhead. It went on to be a much larger missile boasting two solid fuel stages. Deployment of the Nike Hercules started in 1958 and it was deployed at over 130 bases within the United States alone. The Hercules would go on to be the last operational missile from Bell’s Nike Team and it remained the United States’ primary heavy SAM (surface-to-air-missile) until it was replaced by the MIM-104 Patriot in the 1980s.
The Boyce Aerospace Hobbies Nike Hercules 1/14th Scale "Builders Kit" will be available for purchase Tuesday, September 17th at 12:00AM EDT.
